Warmia and Mazury have a significant potential in providing human resources for innovative economy

: the region have several thousand outstanding scientists (2 thousand academic teachers work at the University of Warmia and Mazury, and 13 Faculties of the University have full academic rights, which means that they are entitled to grant the degree of doctor with habilitation (a second grade of the Ph.D. degree).

The Province boasts active science and R&D entities renowned in the country and abroad, with considerable academic achievements, highly appreciated for the implementation of new technologies, the sale of licences and participation in international research projects.
- Among tertiary schools particularly the University of Warmia and Mazury is worth mentioning,
- the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences,
- the Inland Fishing Institute in Olsztyn,
- the State School of Professional Education in Elbląg, specialising in ICT and environmental technologies,
- the Dairy Research and Development Centre – the most advanced one in Poland,
- the Centre for Research of Natural and Traditional Food at the University of Warmia and Mazury.


Every year the Province’s investments in the science and research infrastructure are getting bigger. In 2013 they amounted to over 163 million zloty.


The recent years brought significant successes in Warmia and Mazury resulting from the completion of serious R&D investments, the aim of which was considerable development of science and research facilities and achieving a status of a science and research centre with a European and world prestige.

Some of the investments at the University of Warmia and Mazury: the Centre for Aquaculture and Environmental Engineering, modern laboratories for research on water organisms; the expansion of the Faculty of Technological Sciences by a complex of university buildings and the main building of the Faculty with a hall and six new laboratories with specialist apparatus; and the opening of new buildings of the Faculty of Animal Bioengineering.

Moreover, the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences, within the establishment of the Regional Centre for Research and Knowledge Transfer “Food for Health”, expanded the highly specialist research laboratories which constitute today the science and research facilities for creating innovations and developing permanent co-operation between the Institute researchers and the region’s enterprises from the agricultural and food industry.

At the University of Warmia and Mazury the Centre of Innovation and Technology Transfer also operates, the task of which is to provide for the best possible use of the intellectual and technical potential of the university and the transfer (sale or gratuitous transfer) of results of the UWM research and development projects to the economy.
The Centre offers a broad range of information, advisory and training services as well as intermediary services in the scope of establishing the cooperation and technology transfer to researchers, students and entrepreneurs. Contact

The science and R&D entities of Warmia and Mazury are simply in the top and take high places in the rankings of efficiency of the granted funding for advanced innovative projects:
- the ranking of the National Science Centre – the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences has the 37th rank (among 185 science entities).
