The tourism industry as well as a number of activities that have great potential for innovation while meeting environmental needs have developed around the water.
Examples of specialization elements:
- Production of machinery (production of waterjet cutting machines, production of turbines and components for the shipbuilding and naval industries);
- Yacht and boat manufacturing (yacht and power boat manufacturers, boat building services, sailing studios (sail making));
- Water transport (passenger cruises, cargo water transport, boat and yacht transport);
- Water sports (organization of sporting events (regatta, sailing camps), swimming schools, sailing training, windsurfing, kitesurfing, diving, iceboating, water equipment sales, fishing, steering services, yacht and boat charters);
- Natural environment and its protection, including construction of environmental protection facilities (hydroelectric power plants: generation, transmission, distribution and trade, sewage collection and treatment, lake reclamation, water and sewage infrastructure, water collection, treatment and supply, recycling, waste disposal);
- Accommodation and wellness (hotels, SPA and wellness facilities, water parks and aquaspheres, health resorts, graduation towers);
- Agri-food industry (farming of fish and other aquatic organisms, fish processing and preservation, production of juices, beer and other beverages, fishing);
- Science and IOB (universities (education and research), thematic schools, institutes and laboratories, agencies, organizations, associations, clusters).
In recent years, there has been an extremely dynamic development of infrastructure for tourists – new luxurious (four and five-star) hotels with SPA and wellness facilities are being built throughout the region, including Gołębiewski Hotel in Mikolajki, Krasicki Hotel in Lidzbark Warmiński, Grand Hotel TIFFI in Iława, Natura Mazur – Resort & Conference Warchały, Galery 69 Hotel in Dorotowo near Olsztyn, Masuria Hotel in Worliny, Marina Golf Club Hotel in Sila near Tomaszkowo, St. Bruno Hotel or Mikołajki Mazury Hotel. There are 77 excellent hotels in the region, of which 52 are three-star hotels, 21 are four-star hotels, and 4 are five-star hotels. In the Land of a Thousand Lakes, the offer of hoteliers is already more tailored to the needs of foreign tourists. Moreover, ecological marinas are being built, ready to receive thousands of sailors.
The Warmia and Masuria region is known for manufacture of yachts (with an excellent reputation abroad), boats and related services. The Masuria region is home to such companies as Delphia Yachts of Olecko, which belongs to the top Polish manufacturers of sailing yachts (they manufacture more than 150 sailing yachts and 1,000 motor yachts annually, and these are mainly sold to Western Europe markets). Other yacht shipyards operating in the region include Northman of Węgorzewo or Ostróda Yacht of Ostróda.
