The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways has just signed a contract for the expansion of the Olsztyn-Barczewo section, which will be adapted to expressway standards
After the tender process, which was extended due to the cancellation of one of the bidders, the contractor for the next section of the most important road for Warmia and Mazury was finally selected. The investment, the cost of which will amount to over PLN 507 million, will be carried out by Budimex.
The S16 road is of key importance for north-eastern Poland. The expansion agreement covers an 11-kilometer section of the S16 road on the Olsztyn Wschód – Barczewo section. It is intended to facilitate communication towards Masuria, east of Olsztyn. Both the region’s inhabitants and tourists will benefit from the modernization.
The time of transit trips will be shortened in the very demanding Warmian-Masurian region. This is also very good news for those who travel locally. The expansion of the route will also improve the attractiveness of the entire voivodeship
– says the minister. Minister of Infrastructure Dariusz Klimczak
The works will consist in adapting the existing national road No. 16 to expressway standards by building a second road and rebuilding selected sections. As part of the investment, new road junctions Wójtowo and Łęgajny will also be built, which will facilitate access to the surrounding areas. The Barczewo junction will also be adapted to the parameters of the expressway.
During construction, the contractor will again use reclaimed asphalt obtained from the demolition of the current section of DK16. Budimex, as planned, intends to build it into a new surface, which will reduce costs and increase the ecological aspect of the investment. The works are scheduled to be completed by 2028, and the new road should be put into operation in the same year.
The S16 expressway, which is the main east-west transport channel in north-eastern Poland, is of key importance not only for residents, but also for tourists and investors. Modernization of the S16 infrastructure will improve the route’s capacity, increase traffic safety, shorten travel times and improve travel comfort for residents, tourists and transit. This will attract new investors to the region and increase its tourist attractiveness. This investment is an important element of the infrastructure development strategy of Warmia and Mazury, striving to create a coherent and modern network of expressways and motorways.
